Interview by Minä Olen Health magazine in Finland. Question: Tel us something about yourself. How did you get acquainted with this kind of raw food diet? Aajonus Vonderplanitz: There was an evolution to the present advancement of my Primal Diet. It was not something that was taught, or in vogue. Nothing like it existed at the time, in 1976. Before that, I began investigating dietary and nutritional perspectives to improve health, 34 years ago. A year prior to beginning those investigations, I had been diagnosed with cancers of the stomach, blood, bone and lymph with no chance for survival. Also, I had long suf ered Type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, angina, bursitis and stomach ulcer. I suf ered with pain most every minute of the day and I could not sleep unless I was immersed in a bathtub ful of hot water containing 2 cups of raw milk, 2 ounces raw apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sundried sea salt. It made my body somewhat buoyant and relieved enough of my pain, enabling me to sleep. Medical therapies had caused the cancers and crippled me. I chose death at home rather than a hospice. My dietary journey began when a health volunteer coaxed me into drinking raw carrot juice. He told me about a woman who had supposedly cured her cancer by drinking raw carrot juice. It tasted good so I drank it. I had suffered autism since I was 1 1/2 years old (the sideef ects of mercury in a tetanus vaccine). I was unable to comprehend language. My communication skil s were limited to sound bites that, I came to recognize, evoked certain responses. Beyond that, I was communicatively incompetent. I could not even comprehend that the word the had a meaning at the age of 21 years. Approximately 10 days after I began drinking the carrot juice on a daily basis, my autism reversed. I had no vocabulary but I comprehended language! I was thril ed. I borrowed $110 and spent it on nutritional ybased books. I studied for 3 ½ years under the tutelage of Los Angeles’ top nutritionist of the time. The rest was experimental, to see what worked, not simply what was reasonable, logical and/or rational. Q: What is happening in our body? Why do we need this kind of diet? AV: I answered those questions in some detail in my books. We do not have time to give al of those details here. Basical y, cooking and/or processing our food causes toxic byproducts to form in the food that gradual y and accumulatively degrade our health. Cooking and processing damages or destroys al enzymes, vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The alteration of nutrients gradual y causing systemic deficiencies. The accumulations of toxins cause bodily malfunctions that often increase to diseases. Some people have the ability to mask il symptoms from excessive hormonal production, and other factors, and seem wonderful y healthy most of their lives. However, most of us suf er more and more everyday until we find ourselves in an advanced state of disease. Q: What are the greatest benefits of this diet? AV: One, we are able to slowly detoxify most if not al of the toxic poisons that have col ected in our bodies from a lifetime of cooked and processed foodpoisoning that most often causes disease. Two, we have cleaner and more balanced blood, neurological and lymphatic systems, al owing for bet er bodily function. Some people choose to exercise, some people use health care products, while others change dietary habits in a bid to improve one’s physical health. Some local people have attempted the Primal Diet which originated from the U.S. in recent years. The diet advocates consumption of unprocessed and raw foods, including fish, meat, vegetables and more, so as to preserve the food’s natural goodness and al ow the body to better absorb nutrients for improved health. Seven years ago, 25yearold Kian, despite his youth, suffered from chronic fatigue. Other than being mental y tired, his physical energy was also lower than before. In addition, a persistent cough also troubled him. Many such signs showed him that his health was going down hill, with the possibility of premature aging. Kian, who had never been particularly health conscious, felt that these signs were a “red alert warning” of things to come, and he felt worried. “I would pant heavily just climbing the stairs at home, frequently have insomnia, and didn’t have much energy during the day. I thought, if my health is so bad when I am only 20 years old, how would I be when I’m 30, 40 or 50?” Like many Singaporeans, Kian liked eating al kinds of tasty foods, such as fried noodles, chicken rice, and wild exotic cuisine. Kian felt that other than stress from work, diet must have played a major role in his declining health. Thus he decided to look for answers to health via foods. Kian is a self-employed information science and technology consultant, and the majority of his work time is spent at home, al owing him to access the Internet and do his own research in finding solutions for optimal health and vitality. He tried the most common purported dietary health solutions: vegetarianism as well as fruitarianism. Vegetarians do not eat meat, and mainly eat vegetables and gluten-derived foods; fruitarians eat mainly fruits and drink fruit juices. “Initially, I felt digestion improved and my body felt lighter. However, this improved situation only lasted a month or so. After that, my weight dropped, and my body felt cold and listless, and my skin turned yellowish.” By chance, Kian found a diet via the Internet called the Primal Diet which he had never heard of before. Primal dieters do not eat anything cooked or processed, including rice, bread and any processed sauces, and they eat a variety of meats such as beef, chicken, and fish, except for pork. Eggs, raw milk, raw butter and raw cream also form the bulk of the diet. In addition, they avoid eating fiber as the fiber supposedly damages the body’s ability to digest meat properly. However, they take in vitamins and minerals from vegetables in the form of green juices. He said, “This sounded very inconceivable to me, because I have never heard of anyone promoting consumption of raw meat. In order to prove that this diet does not work, I decided to give it a try.” Unexpectedly, his trial created “astonishing results.” He said, “That very evening was my deepest and most restful sleep in more than 20 years. The next morning, I felt very rested and my energy level was high throughout the day.” “Initially, there was some trepidation, especial y when first consuming raw cream, I felt a little put of as the taste was different.
